You can use just about any mouthbrooding cichlid as a host. I have used C. borleyi, L. hongi, A, stuartgranti hongi isl, and now I am using Hap. burtoni. Most serious breeders that I have talked to have to change out their host group every couple of months to a year. The host wises up to the the Syno's game. I have heard people having a lot of success with the burtoni and Calliptera.

So far I have gotten 2 spawns with my burtoni. not many surviving fry but that is a problem with my process that I have fixed (I think).

I forgot to reply to this post. I have had very little success with my multis.

I have gotten tow fry from my ngara group. Not intentional. I have them set up with a group of christmas fulus now(1m/6f) and I have gotten nothing. I had them with white top haras. They spawned 3 times and no multi fry. I am about ready to sell the 3 pairs of multis that I have.
